Renu Lynching Case: One Sentenced to Death, Four to Life Imprisonment

In the case of the lynching of Taslima Begum Renu, who was beaten to death on suspicion of being a child abductor in North Badda, Dhaka, the court has sentenced one person to death and four others to life imprisonment.

The verdict was delivered today, Wednesday (October 9), by Judge Murshid Ahmed of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka.

On July 20, 2019, an enraged mob attacked and severely injured Taslima Begum Renu in North Badda on suspicion of being involved in child abduction. She was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Following the incident, her nephew, Nasir Uddin, filed a murder case at Badda Police Station against 400-500 unidentified individuals.

On September 10, 2020, Detective Branch (DB) police inspector Abdul Haque, the investigating officer, submitted a charge sheet against 15 individuals at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court. On April 1, 2021, Judge Fatima Imroz Khonika of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court framed charges against 13 accused. Out of 36 witnesses, 19 have testified in the case.

The accused listed in the charge sheet are Ibrahim alias Hridoy Molla, Riya Begum Moyna, Abul Kalam Azad, Kamal Hossain, Md. Shahin, Bacchu Mia, Md. Bappi, Murad Mia, Sohel Rana, Asadul Islam, Bellal Molla, Md. Raju, and Mohin Uddin.

Additionally, two minors, Zafar Hossain Patwari and Wasim Ahmed, have been charged separately and are being tried in juvenile court.
