Dengue claimed nine lives in the last 24 hours, marking the highest single-day death toll from the disease this year, according to a report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The report stated that 915 new patients were hospitalized with dengue during this period. Of these, 331 were from areas under Dhaka city corporations, while the remaining cases were reported from outside the capital. Additionally, 780 patients were discharged from hospitals during the same time.

So far this year, 41,810 people have been admitted to hospitals due to dengue, with 37,952 of them recovering. The total death toll from the disease now stands at 210.

Dr. Atiqur Rahman, a specialist physician, commented that dengue is no longer seasonal, as cases are being reported throughout the year, increasing during rainy periods. He stressed the need for mosquito repellents and widespread awareness campaigns by city corporations, along with personal vigilance.

Entomologist Dr. Manjur Chowdhury warned that awareness campaigns and fines alone are not enough to control mosquito populations. "Accurate surveys and appropriate action by skilled personnel are essential," he emphasized.

Notably, 2023 saw the highest number of dengue cases in Bangladesh’s history, with 321,179 infections and 1,705 deaths.
