Saima Wazed Putul Was Canadian Citizen When Nominated for WHO Post: ACC
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has revealed that Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, holds Canadian citizenship in addition to her Bangladeshi nationality. The findings emerged during an investigation into allegations of corruption and misuse of state resources.
According to the ACC, Putul participated in numerous state visits as a delegate without valid justification, raising questions about the legitimacy of her inclusion. Furthermore, her qualifications for her candidacy as Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for South-East Asia were deemed inadequate. The commission also confirmed that Putul possesses a Canadian passport, verifying her dual citizenship status.
The investigation uncovered evidence that Putul exploited her family's political influence to illegally obtain a 10-katha plot in Dhaka's Diplomatic Zone, part of the "Purbachal New Town Residential Project." In response, the ACC has filed a corruption case against her and other individuals implicated in the matter.
Additionally, the ACC reported that through her organization, the "Suchona Foundation," Putul allegedly coerced businesses and social entities into providing gifts and funds, which were later misappropriated. She is also accused of misusing the Autism Cell under the Health Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare by fabricating projects to embezzle significant sums of public funds.
The investigation further revealed that Putul exerted undue influence on the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to secure tax exemptions for income generated under the foundation’s name, resulting in substantial financial losses to the government. Based on these findings, the ACC has announced credible evidence of corruption against Saima Wazed Putul.
