7 Colleges to Become an Independent University: Edu Advisor
Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud, the Education Advisor, has announced that the seven colleges currently affiliated with Dhaka University will be transformed into an independent university.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning (January 28), Professor Mahmud explained that the government's decision eight years ago to affiliate these colleges with Dhaka University was made without sufficient foresight. To resolve these issues, the government has decided to establish a new, standalone university encompassing these seven colleges.
However, the Education Advisor emphasized that the process of setting up a new university is complex and will take time. "This isn't something that can be accomplished overnight. Structural issues need to be resolved, and we are currently working on a suitable model for the university," he stated.
He said, "A university, once established, endures for generations. The interests of students are paramount, and we cannot afford to make hasty or imprudent decisions. Every step will be taken with care and thorough consideration."
Professor Mahmud outlined several key requirements for establishing the new university, including drafting a constitution, recruiting faculty, and addressing legal and financial matters. He also noted that obtaining a state-issued charter is essential before the university can officially operate.
"Enrolling students in a university without a charter is entirely illegal," he said, adding that Dhaka University and the authorities of the seven colleges have agreed to conduct separate admissions starting from the next academic session.
Incoming students for the 2024–25 academic year will face a distinct admission process. The Education Advisor assured that student opinions will be considered during discussions, and decisions will be made in consultation with them.
