HRW Report:
Sheikh Hasina Personally Ordered Abductions and Killings
Ousted Bangladeshi autocrat Sheikh Hasina "personally ordered abductions and killings," according to a report by the US-based international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW). The report reveals alarming details of human rights violations.
On Tuesday (January 28), an HRW delegation led by its Asia Director, Elaine Pearson, met with Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus. During the meeting, they handed over a report on the July Revolution.
The HRW delegation praised the interim government’s efforts in reform initiatives and improving the country’s human rights situation.
HRW’s Asia Chief stated, "We commend the progress you have made so far." Referring to the human rights situation during the July-August uprising, she noted, "The people of Bangladesh are now increasingly aware of the importance of human rights in all aspects of life."
HRW has recommended the dissolution of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), stating that officers responsible for killings and enforced disappearances must be held accountable for their crimes.
Acknowledging HRW’s efforts amid the harsh realities of Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian rule, Dr. Yunus said, "Reports over the past 16 years have exposed the extensive crimes of the ruling regime."
He further stated, "RAB has publicly apologized for its crimes, but those responsible for extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances must be prosecuted and punished."
Elaine Pearson remarked that from 2009 to 2024, under Sheikh Hasina’s rule, the security forces were politically influenced and operated like 'party enforcers,' necessitating systematic reforms.
The Chief Adviser reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and openness, saying, "We have published all reform recommendations so that the people can decide on the necessary changes. As you mentioned, reversing 15 years of repression and crimes will be a challenging task."
According to the HRW report, officials involved in enforced disappearances told HRW that Sheikh Hasina or senior government officials were aware of the disappearances, and in some cases, Sheikh Hasina herself directly ordered abductions and killings.
HRW’s Asia Chief also mentioned that during her visit, she met with several key officials from the Reform Commission and senior representatives handling the Rohingya issue.
The organization emphasized that the reforms should be institutionalized and security forces must be placed under proper oversight.
Additionally, the Chief Adviser called for the establishment of a safe zone in Rakhine for thousands of displaced Rohingya. He expressed hope that the UN, the international community, and the Arakan Army—Myanmar’s key rebel group—would ensure the security of this safe zone.
