The Media Reform Commission has informed the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, that the current mandate to use a specific satellite has prevented Bangladeshi television channels from being accessible abroad. In response, he has hinted at the possibility of removing this restriction for the country's TV channels.
Dr Yunus assured that the government would take necessary steps to make Bangladeshi TV channels accessible to Bangladeshis living abroad and interested foreign audiences.
On Saturday (March 22), the Media Reform Commission presented its report to Dr Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna. Based on the information shared by the commission members, Dr Yunus made this statement.
He also mentioned that the government aims to implement the feasible reform proposals as quickly as possible. He encouraged the commission to present recommendations that can be acted upon promptly.
Dr Yunus described the efforts of the Media Reform Commission, led by senior journalist Kamal Ahmed, as invaluable. He also suggested that the report should be made accessible to journalism students in universities and the general public.
The report submission event was attended by several key figures, including Kamal Ahmed, head of the Media Reform Commission, Professor Gitiara Nasreen from Dhaka University's Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Shamsul Hoque Zahid, Editor of The Financial Express and representative of the Editors' Council, Anjan Chowdhury, Managing Director of Maasranga Television and representative of the Association of Television Owners (ATCO), Akhtar Hossain Khan, Secretary of the Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB), Syed Abdal Ahmed, former General Secretary of the National Press Club, Fahim Ahmed, CEO of Jamuna Television and Trustee of the Broadcast Journalist Center, Jimmy Amir, Convener of the Media Support Network, Mostafa Sabuj, Bogura district correspondent of The Daily Star, Titu Dutta Gupta, Deputy Editor of The Business Standard, and student representative Abdullah Al Mamun.
