India Seeks Stronger Ties with Bangladesh

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh's interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, held a meeting on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

During the meeting, the Indian Prime Minister expressed his desire for positive and constructive relations with Bangladesh.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri disclosed this information while speaking to reporters after the meeting on Friday (April 4th).

He stated that Prime Minister Modi discussed various issues with Dr. Yunus. During the meeting, Modi raised the issue of the Hindu and other minority communities in Bangladesh and expressed his concerns.

Additionally, he conveyed India's aspiration for positive and constructive relations with Bangladesh. Besides these topics, the issue of the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was also raised during the meeting.

The Indian Foreign Secretary said that Prime Minister Modi reiterated his support for an inclusive, progressive, peaceful, stable, and democratic Bangladesh. He also requested that statements affecting the relationship between the two countries be avoided.

Vikram Misri also mentioned that discussions were held between the two leaders regarding the border. He said that Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for strict enforcement of laws at the border and preventing illegal infiltration to ensure border security.

Furthermore, he conveyed India's concerns regarding the Hindu and other minority communities in Bangladesh and requested an investigation into incidents of violence against them.

When asked whether the extradition of Sheikh Hasina was discussed in the meeting, the Indian Foreign Secretary said that Bangladesh has sent a formal letter regarding this matter.

However, he added, "It would not be appropriate for me to say more than this at the moment regarding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina."
