This information was confirmed on Friday (April 4) by Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He stated that the Myanmar government has officially recognized 180,000 Rohingya from those who took refuge in Bangladesh as eligible for repatriation.
Between 2018 and 2020, Bangladesh provided Myanmar with a list of approximately 800,000 Rohingya in six phases. Among them, the final verification process for an additional 70,000 Rohingya is still ongoing. Once the verification is complete, their fate will also be determined, according to the Chief Adviser’s representative.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar, remarked that this is a significant step toward resolving the Rohingya crisis, as it is the first time Myanmar has officially confirmed the repatriation of such a large number of Rohingya.
On Friday (April 4), during a meeting on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, U Than Shwe, assured Dr. Khalilur Rahman that efforts would be made to expedite the verification process for the remaining 550,000 Rohingya on the main list.
During the meeting, Dr. Khalilur Rahman expressed condolences for those affected by Myanmar’s recent earthquake. He also conveyed Bangladesh’s willingness to provide further humanitarian assistance.
