Rezaul Karim Mallick has been removed from the position of Chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
This information was announced in an order signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali on Sunday (April 13).
According to the order, Additional Commissioner (Detective) Rezaul Karim Mallik has been attached to the DMP Headquarters.
It further stated that, in the interest of administration, Rezaul Karim Mallik has been assigned to the position mentioned beside his name until further notice. The order will be effective immediately.
On April 7, Meghna Alam—a model and Miss Earth Bangladesh winner—was detained from her residence in Dhaka by members of the DMP's Detective Branch. On April 10, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court ordered her detention for 30 days under the Special Powers Act of 1974.
The incident drew public criticism, prompting the DMP to issue a clarification on April 11. In the statement, the DMP explained that Meghna was taken into custody following all legal procedures. She is accused of conspiring to undermine national security, spreading false information about key figures to strain international relations, and attempting to cause economic harm to the country. The DMP denied allegations that she had been abducted and affirmed her legal right to challenge the detention.
Rezaul assumed his role as the DB Chief on September 1, 2024. A 17th BCS (Police) cadre officer, he joined Bangladesh Police in 1998. Over the years, he has served in various key units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), before leading the DB.
