AL’s Dr. Yunus Ali wins Gaibangha-3 election

Awami League candidate Dr. Yunus Ali Sarker was unofficially declared elected in the election to Gaibandha-3 (Sadullapur-Palashbari) constituency.

He bagged 121,163 votes while his nearest rival Barrister Dilara Khandaker Shilpi of Jatiya Party polled 24,385.

Earlier, voting in the election was held from 8am to 4pm without any break on Sunday.

This election was scheduled to be held on December 30. The voting in this constituency was suspended by the Election Commission on December 20 following death of Jatiya Oikyafront candidate and Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) leader T I M Fazle Rabbi.   

Later in the declared new election schedule the date of voting was fixed on January 27. In this election Gaibandha district BNP president Mainul Hasan Sadik submitted nomination paper but on January 10 he withdrew his nomination fearing vote rigging and irregularities.

In the eleventh national parliament election Awami League won 258 seats. Syed Ashraful Islam was also elected from Kishoreganj-1 constituency in that election of December 30. But he died before taking oath. The by-election in this constituency will be held on February 28.
