After resuming regular payments, Bangladesh is now receiving a full electricity supply from Gautam Adani's Adani Power. Previously, supply had been reduced due to outstanding dues.
On Thursday (March 27), Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Chairman Rezaul Karim told Bloomberg that payments to Adani are now being made on time, ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply.
However, he did not disclose the exact repayment amount or details of past dues. The outstanding balance, which was $850 million, has now decreased to $800 million, with full repayment expected within six months.
BPDB sources confirm that Adani Power Limited increased supply over two weeks ago. Last November, due to multiple missed payments, Adani cut power supply by half from its 1,600 MW coal-based plant in Jharkhand, India.
To clear the dues, BPDB has been paying Adani $85 million per month and has now requested power from the second unit as well.
In December, an Adani source stated that Bangladesh owed nearly $900 million. However, BPDB Chairman Rezaul Karim later clarified that the actual payable amount was closer to $650 million.
There have also been disputes over electricity pricing. As per a 2017 agreement, prices are determined based on the average of two indices. Reuters reports that the electricity supplied by Adani to Bangladesh is 55% more expensive than power from other Indian plants.
