The interim government has proposed a Tk 4.052 billion (Tk 405.20 crore) allocation in the national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year to support the families of those martyred and injured in the July Uprising.
Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, presenting his first national budget since his tenure as central bank governor over a decade ago, announced the Tk 7.90 trillion proposal while addressing parliament on Thursday.
Highlighting the significance of the allocation, Salehuddin stated that the funds aim to honour the memory and legacy of the July Uprising, rehabilitate injured civilians and students, and embed the movement’s ideals into national life.
He revealed that a dedicated Department of the July Uprising has already been formed, and plans are in motion to transform Gonobhaban into the July Uprising Memorial Museum.
Additionally, a policy guideline is being developed to begin the disbursement of allowances for affected families. Measures are also being taken to provide proper medical treatment and long-term rehabilitation for the injured.
Explaining the broader context of the budget, the finance adviser noted that this year’s spending plan is deliberately restrained to reflect economic realities. He said the government is prioritising deficit reduction while offering targeted relief for lower-income groups amid ongoing political tensions.
