The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for the initiative taken by Bangladesh's interim government to recover laundered money.
British Trade Minister and President of the Board of Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, expressed this support during a meeting with the visiting Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in London on Wednesday (June 11). This information comes from BSS.
According to the news agency's report, Dr. Yunus and Jonathan Reynolds discussed enhancing bilateral trade relations and increasing investment opportunities between the two friendly countries during their meeting.
In addition to matters of mutual interest, the discussions included strategies for boosting trade and ways to increase British investment in Bangladesh. At this time, Reynolds reiterated the UK's support for the interim government's efforts to recover illicit funds smuggled from Bangladesh to various countries.
During the meeting, Dr. Yunus highlighted the interim government's efforts to restore the economy. He particularly emphasized to the British Trade Minister the importance of reforming the banking sector, stabilizing foreign exchange reserves, and maintaining overall economic stability.
National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Chief Advisor's Special Envoy Lutfe Siddiqi, and Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, Lutfe Siddiqi proposed initiating a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) between the UK and Bangladesh. The Chief Advisor's special envoy stated that Dhaka has already begun FTA discussions with several countries, including Japan.
