Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, has departed London for Dhaka, concluding his four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.
On Friday (13 June), he boarded a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 7:15 pm local time, accompanied by members of his delegation.
Chief Adviser's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, highlighted five major achievements of the visit in a Facebook post shared from his verified account late Friday night.
Here are five key achievements of CA's UK visit:
Royal Recognition and Private Meeting with King Charles:
Dr Yunus received a prestigious award from King Charles and held a 30-minute private meeting with the monarch. The recognition is seen as an acknowledgement of Bangladesh's July Movement and the country's ongoing transformation.
Landmark Dialogue with BNP Leader:
A historic meeting took place between the Chief Adviser and the top leader of Bangladesh's largest political party, the BNP. The encounter is being described as a decisive turning point—a "game over" moment for those opposing progress.
Seizure of £170 Million Linked to Former Regime:
The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has confiscated £170 million in assets belonging to a key associate of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. NCA officials noted it as the largest asset seizure in the agency's history—a strong signal to corrupt figures worldwide and a major boost to the asset recovery drive led by Dr Yunus.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation on Asset Recovery:
A series of meetings was held between senior officials from Bangladesh and the UK, including the Governor of the Bangladesh Bank and the Chairman of the ACC. These discussions laid the groundwork for deeper collaboration in recovering illicit assets and could serve as a model for global efforts.
Fresh Momentum on the Rohingya Crisis:
The visit also reignited international engagement on resolving the Rohingya refugee issue, creating new optimism for a sustainable solution.
Dr Yunus had arrived in London on 10 June at 7:05 am local time via an Emirates Airlines flight. His delegation included Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur, Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Dr Abdul Momen, and other senior officials.
