Attack and Arson at Obaidul Quader's House

Members of the Student Movement for Social Justice from Noakhali district have attacked the residence of former Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, of the Awami League government.

On Thursday (February 6), at approximately 1:00 pm, protesters carried out vandalism and set fire to Obaidul Quader's house in Rajapur village, Ward No 1 of Bashurhat Municipality in the Companyganj Upazila.

Reports from the scene show that protesters were positioned on the roof, inside the house, and in front of it. They set fire to various household items, the railings of the roof, and a car that was already burned in front of the house.

A local resident mentioned that there is no personal room belonging to Obaidul Quader in the house. The property belongs to his younger brother, Kader Mirza. A social media post had announced that the attack would take place at 11:00 am, which led journalists to gather outside the house from the morning. People from different areas also arrived to observe the scene.

The protesters stated that Obaidul Quader, the General Secretary of the Awami League, and his provocative statements responsible for the attacks on students across the country. They said that today's protest is an expression of the anger and frustration of the public and students. "Anyone who engages in such corrupt politics will face such consequences. This is our final message," they added.

Previously, on Wednesday (February 5) morning, the coordinators of the Student Movement for Social Justice in Noakhali district had announced their intention on Facebook to demolish Obaidul Quader's house with bulldozers. The post read: "Revolutionaries of Noakhali, be ready with bulldozers. March to Kader's house! Today at 11 am."

Obaidul Quader was born in Rajapur village in Bashurhat Municipality, Companyganj Upazila, where his family graveyard is located. His parents are buried there, and the house belongs to his brothers and cousins.

On August 5 of the previous year, protesters had carried out a similar attack on his ancestral home, destroying property, setting fire to it, and looting items from inside the house.
