World Bank to provide Tk 3642 cr in power sector

Big initiatives have been taken with assistance from World Bank (WB) for the development of power sector in the country. For enhancement and empowerment of eastern region grid network taka 5 thousand 803 crore will be spent. Of the amount WB will provide 3 thousand 642 crore taka.

A project in this regard was approved in the meeting of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday.

Total 15 projects were approved in the meeting with a cost of 17 thousand 987 crore 23 lakh taka.

After the meeting Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal briefed the newsmen about the projects. Planning Secretary Ziaul Islam, General Economic Division Member Dr. Shamsul Alam and others were present at that time.

The Planning Minister said, 15 projects (new and revised) were approved in the meeting. The total cost will be 17 thousand 987 crore 23 lakh taka. Of this taka 11 thousand 940 crore 32 lakh will come from government financing, taka 523 crore 69 lakh will be spent from organization’s own financing and taka 5 thousand 523 crore 22 lakh will come as project assistance.

He said, plans have been taken to build strong grid network in the east zone such as Comilla, Noakhali and Chittagong. Through the project infrastructural development in the existing generation system will be done. The power grid system of this area is much older and its capability is also insufficient.

To implement the project government will provide taka 1 thousand 683 crore 38 lakh from its own fund, WB will provide credit of 3 thousand 642 crore 48 lakh taka and project implementing agency Power Grid Company of Bangladesh will provide 478 crore 7 lakh taka from its own resources.

Under the project 12.63 kilometers 400 KV generation line will be constructed. Besides, 175.91 kilometers 230 KV generation line, 256.3 kilometers 132 KV generation line, two 400 KV sub stations, two 230 KV sub stations, ten 132 KV sub stations  will be constructed. In addition land acquisition and management system modernization activities will be done.
