Gold Trader Shot, 200 Bhori Looted in Dhaka Heist

A gang of armed robbers shot a gold trader, Anwar Hossain (43), in Dhaka’s Banasree area under Rampura Police Station and snatched nearly 200 bhori of gold along with one lakh taka in cash from him in broad daylight.

The incident took place around 10:30 PM on Sunday (Feb 23) in front of House No. 20, Road No. 7, Block D, Banasree. Witnesses from a nearby building captured the robbery and shooting on their mobile phones, and the footage quickly went viral on social media overnight.

The incident has left city residents in shock, with many questioning Dhaka’s security situation in the comments of widely shared posts.

How the Attack Unfolded
Video footage shows seven robbers on three motorcycles ambushing Anwar Hossain in front of his house. The attackers forcibly threw him onto the road near the gate, with one of them snatching his bag, while another repeatedly stabbed him with a knife.

The victim screamed for help, shouting “Ma go! Ma go!” (Mother, oh mother!), as he desperately tried to hold onto his bag. As he resisted, one of the robbers fired several rounds at him, forcing him to flee backward in pain while still screaming for help.

Local residents recorded the horrific robbery from nearby buildings, with many shouting in terror as the attackers stabbed and shot the businessman. The gang quickly escaped on their motorcycles after seizing the bag.

The 18-second video of the brutal attack has sparked outrage across social media platforms.

Victim in Critical Condition
Around midnight, locals rushed the injured businessman to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition.

Anwar Hossain, who lives in Banasree with his family, hails from the Begumganj area of Noakhali district.

Mujibur Rahman from Alankar Jewellers, who accompanied him to the hospital, described the attack:

“On his way home from work, several motorcycles blocked his path and attempted to snatch his gold and money. When he resisted, they fired four shots at him before escaping with nearly 200 bhori of gold and cash. We first took him to a private hospital before bringing him to DMCH for better treatment. His condition is critical,” said Mujibur.

Police Investigation Underway
Rampura Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Ataur Rahman Akand confirmed the attack:

“The robbers ambushed him near his home while he was returning from his shop. They looted his gold, fired shots, and stabbed him before fleeing.”

He further stated: “The victim has told us the robbers took around 200 bhori of gold. We are currently at the scene, collecting CCTV footage and investigating the case. Our team is actively working to identify and arrest the suspects as soon as possible.”
