A Dhaka court has instructed the jail authorities to facilitate the marriage of popular singer Mainul Ahsan Nobel with the former Eden Mohila College student who filed a rape case against him.
The court's directive, issued on Wednesday (June 18), is for the marriage to be conducted through a registered Nikah Nama (marriage contract), based on the mutual consent of both parties.
Nobel's lawyer filed an application with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhtar on Wednesday. In response to this application, the court ordered the jail authorities to take necessary measures for the marriage, as agreed upon by both the plaintiff and the defendant.
The application stated that the accused, Nobel, has been in jail since May 20. It further mentioned that the plaintiff filed the case due to a misunderstanding between the parties, and both the plaintiff and the accused are now willing to get married.
Therefore, it was deemed essential to grant permission for their marriage while Nobel is in jail. After a hearing, the court granted the application.
Background of the Case
Earlier, Nobel was arrested by police around 2 AM on May 19 from his residence in Demra Staff Quarters. Police arrested him in connection with a case filed by Demra Police Station in Dhaka, alleging that he forcibly raped a former Eden Mohila College student after detaining her at his home.
The day after his arrest, a Dhaka lower court denied Nobel's bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to the case allegations, the victim, who was studying at Eden Mohila College, resided in a rented apartment in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
In 2018, she became acquainted with Nobel through social media. Nobel frequently communicated with the plaintiff via mobile phone.
Eventually, on November 12, 2024, Nobel met the plaintiff in Mohammadpur and brought her to his residence in the Demra police station area, under the pretext of showing her his studio.
Upon arriving at Nobel's residence, when the plaintiff expressed her desire to leave, Nobel, with the assistance of 2-3 unidentified accomplices, allegedly confined her in a room, raped her, and recorded the act on his mobile phone.
He then threatened to disseminate the video on social media if the plaintiff did not comply with his wishes.
Fearing Nobel, the plaintiff did not dare to tell anyone. Nobel, aided by his 2-3 unidentified accomplices, dragged the plaintiff by her hair down the stairs and confined her in another room.
A video of this incident went viral on social media, leading the plaintiff's parents to recognize her. While searching for her, her parents called the national emergency service on May 19.
Subsequently, with the assistance of Demra Police, the victim was able to leave Nobel's residence. The case is currently ongoing, and Nobel remains in custody.
In this context, efforts are being made to facilitate his marriage with the plaintiff, as per the court's directive.
