Bangladesh faces the risk of a major earthquake, similar to the recent ones in Myanmar and Thailand. The Fire Service has identified Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Mymensingh as high-risk regions.
Following Friday’s powerful earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand, the Fire Service Headquarters issued a warning in a press release on Saturday morning.
According to the statement, Myanmar and Thailand experienced two strong earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale, causing significant damage. Bangladesh is also vulnerable to similar disasters, particularly in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Mymensingh.
To mitigate risks, the Fire Service has urged the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings in compliance with the Bangladesh National Building Code. Older and structurally weak buildings should be renovated, and fire safety measures in high-rise and commercial buildings must be reinforced.
Additionally, authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining gas, water, and electricity lines to prevent secondary hazards. Emergency contact numbers—including Fire services, ambulance, police, and hospitals—should be readily accessible and visibly displayed in homes and public spaces.
Residents are also advised to keep essential emergency supplies, such as flashlights, radios (with extra batteries), whistles, hammers, helmets, dry food, clean drinking water, necessary medicines, and childcare essentials, stored in a designated location at home.
