Nearly 30,000 workers at US aircraft manufacturer Boeing have gone on strike after rejecting a tentative agreement between the company and labor union representatives, which included a proposed 25 percent pay increase. The strike began on Friday, following a vote in which 96 percent of workers opted to walk off the job, demanding longer contracts and better working conditions. The strike has brought production at Boeing to a near standstill.

German news outlet Deutsche Welle reported that this marks the first major strike by Boeing workers since 2008. The striking employees are members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), many of whom are involved in building Boeing’s 737 Max and other jets in the Seattle and Portland areas.

Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who took over the role just last month, faces a major challenge early in his tenure as he attempts to steer the company through this significant disruption.

John Holden, a labor leader, voiced the workers' frustrations, stating, "It's about honor, it's about addressing the past, and it's about fighting for our future."

In response to the strike, Boeing said in a statement, "We are committed to improving our relationship with our workers and unions. We are also prepared to return to the negotiating table to reach a new agreement."

Industry experts are watching the strike closely. Greg Waldron, Asia managing editor of aviation news website FlightGlobal, noted, "There’s never a good time for a strike, at least from a management perspective, and this could further complicate an already challenging situation for Boeing."

He added that the duration of the strike will play a key role in determining its impact, particularly as airline CEOs who have ordered the 737 Max closely monitor developments.
