Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that the Jewish rulers believe they can suppress and eradicate Hezbollah through Syria. However, their dream will never come true. Instead, it is Israel that will be wiped out, Khamenei said on Tuesday (December 17) during a women’s gathering in Tehran.

In his speech, Khamenei dismissed the notion that the fall of the Syrian government marks the end of the "Resistance Axis" led by Tehran. Referring to the Israeli attacks that killed Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, Khamenei said, “The spirit of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah is alive, the spirit of Sinwar is alive. Martyrs never die.”

The assembled crowd chanted slogans like "Death to America" and "Death to Israel." Khamenei responded by saying, “Our fighters may have departed, but their beliefs and ideals remain alive. These ideals will persist.”

Khamenei further highlighted that Israel continues its daily attacks on Gaza, martyring its people, but Gazans stand tall and resilient. Lebanon also continues to resist Israeli forces, he said.

On December 8, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was ousted amidst continued offensives by Syrian rebels. Assad fled Damascus and sought refuge in Russia, marking the end of a 13-year civil war and his 24-year authoritarian rule. The Assad family had long been allies of Iran and Russia.

Earlier this year, in September, Israel launched a large-scale operation, killing top Hezbollah leaders and over a thousand fighters. Thousands of Lebanese civilians also lost their lives in the conflict, with Israel causing widespread destruction in various parts of Lebanon. Eventually, a ceasefire brokered by the United States was implemented in late November.
