Over 100 workers have been killed after being trapped in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa, according to the organization Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA).

On Tuesday, January 14, a BBC report stated that rescue teams have recovered several bodies, and the rescue operation is ongoing. It is feared that many more workers remain trapped inside.

The abandoned gold mine, locally known as the "Buffelsfontein" gold mine, is located near Stilfontein, 140 kilometers (90 miles) southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa's capital. On Monday, January 13, professional rescuers sent a large cage down into the mine.

Mzukisi Jam, spokesperson for the South African National Civics Organization, said, "The rescue operation is progressing well. So far, seven people have been brought up."

Meanwhile, Sabelo Mnguni, spokesperson for MACUA, reported, "A mobile phone was found with one of the rescued workers. Two videos recorded on it show dozens of dead bodies wrapped in plastic underground. This raises fears that the death toll could exceed 100, possibly due to starvation or dehydration."

Police have noted that entry into the abandoned mine was illegal, which is why many workers are afraid to come out, fearing arrest.

Sabelo Mnguni added, "The official rescue operation has so far recovered nine bodies and rescued 26 people alive."

However, Sabata Mokgwabone, spokesperson for the South African Police Service, stated, "The number of bodies recovered and people rescued is still being verified. The exact figures cannot be confirmed at this moment."
