The Middle East has become a hotbed of tension following tit-for-tat attacks between Israel and Iran. Iran alleges that several countries are assisting Israel in thwarting its attacks. In response, Iran has warned that countries aiding Israel will also become targets.
Citing an unnamed senior Iranian official, US media outlet CNN reported that regional bases of countries attempting to protect Israel would be targeted.
The official stated that Iran has the right to deliver a final response under international law to protect its existence.
He added, "Any country that attempts to protect Israel against Iranian operations will have its regional bases and positions become new targets."
Earlier, CNN, citing two Israeli sources, reported that the United States and several other countries helped Tel Aviv intercept missiles launched from Iran into Israeli territory on Friday evening.
According to a relevant source, some countries in the region had previously assisted Israel's air defense system in the face of Iranian attacks.
Meanwhile, US official McCoy Pitt has warned of "dire consequences" for Iran if it targets US citizens, bases, or infrastructure.
Speaking at the UN Security Council, he stated, "Our highest priority is to ensure the safety and security of US citizens and forces in the region. If Iran targets the United States, the consequences will be extreme."
Background to the Escalation
Earlier on Friday (June 13) morning, Israel launched attacks on nearly 100 locations in Iran using 200 warplanes. These strikes resulted in the deaths of Iran's army chief, the head of the Revolutionary Guard, six nuclear scientists, and over fifty civilians.
Israel's targets included Iranian nuclear facilities, ballistic missile installations, military bases, and air defense systems. Subsequently, Israel conducted several more new attacks at various times throughout Friday.
In response, Iran launched nearly 100 missile attacks on Israel in an operation dubbed 'Operation True Promise 3.' These strikes have reportedly caused casualties among Israeli civilians and damage to numerous facilities.
