Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday (August 11).

The meeting took place in New Delhi on Tuesday, though specific details regarding their discussions have not been officially disclosed.

This follows Trivedi's meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday (August 10).

Over the past two days, the Indian High Commissioner held three high-level meetings with key figures in the Bangladesh government.

On Monday, he met first with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and subsequently with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed. Prior to that, on Sunday, he held discussions with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.

Trivedi secured his first official meeting with the Prime Minister just a month and a half after assuming his formal duties in Dhaka.

This high-level engagement comes at a time when new tensions have emerged in Dhaka-Delhi relations.

These strains were exacerbated after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—who remains in India under a death sentence for crimes against humanity—was recently given the opportunity to interact directly with journalists in Delhi.

Following the Indian envoy's meeting with the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman told journalists that Bangladesh has urged Delhi to expedite the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.

Additionally, a formal request was made for the repatriation of the killers of Inquilab Mancha convener Osman Hadi.

Khalilur Rahman noted that the Indian envoy was strongly apprised of the conducive environment necessary to advance bilateral relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, ongoing friction in Dhaka-Delhi relations has cast uncertainty over Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's participation in the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit in Delhi this September.

Uncertainty remains regarding whether the government will ultimately respond to the invitation extended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman stated that the government has not yet made a final decision on whether the Prime Minister will travel to Delhi.

Addressing a weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited to participate in both a bilateral visit and the BRICS summit.

Dinesh Trivedi presented his credentials as India's new High Commissioner to Bangladesh to then-President Mohammed Shahabuddin on June 25.

One month later, on July 29, Trivedi met with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam.

The Indian government appointed Trivedi, a former railway minister, as its 16th High Commissioner in April of this year.

For the first time in the history of bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries, India has appointed a politician to the diplomatic post. Trivedi entered Bangladesh via the land border from West Bengal on June 5.
