The court has declared BNP candidate Ishraque Hossain as the winner of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election held on February 1, 2020.
On Thursday (March 27), Dhaka's First Joint District Judge, Md Nurul Islam, who is in charge of the Election Tribunal, announced the verdict.
The court also annulled the victory of Awami League's candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, citing allegations of vote rigging.
Ishraque Hossain, son of the late Sadeque Hossain Khoka, the former mayor of undivided Dhaka, was present in court when the verdict was announced.
Following the 2020 DSCC election, BNP candidates, including Ishraque Hossain, rejected the results, alleging widespread irregularities and electoral fraud. They demanded a re-election and presented evidence of these claims to foreign diplomats in Bangladesh. On March 3 of that year, Ishraque filed a lawsuit challenging the election results, which has now resulted in the court's ruling in his favor.
This verdict follows a similar decision in Chattogram, where on October 1, 2024, the Election Tribunal declared BNP's Dr Shahadat Hossain as the rightful mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, overturning Awami League's Rezaul Karim Chowdhury due to election irregularities.
