The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Monday fixed June 28 for delivering its judgment in the high-profile case over the killing of two people and the shooting of a youth hanging from the cornice of a building in the capital's Rampura area during the July-August Mass Uprising in 2024.
A three-member ICT bench led by its chairman, Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar, passed the order after the completion of law-point arguments from both sides.
Following the conclusion of the arguments, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam sought the highest punishment for all five accused involved in the atrocities.
The development follows recent court proceedings where Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, one of the five accused, gave additional testimony in his defence on June 10. He had previously testified in his own defence earlier this year on January 13.
While Sarkar has appeared before the court, the remaining four accused in the case continue to abscond from justice.
The fugitive accused are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Khilgaon Zone Md. Rashedul Islam, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station Md. Mashiur Rahman, and former Sub-Inspector (SI) Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan.
The tribunal had originally set March 4 of this year to deliver the verdict.
However, the timeline was extended after the prosecution filed a petition seeking the submission of new digital evidence.
This petition prompted fresh testimony from Amir Hossain, who stands as the first prosecution witness in the case.
The legal timeline of the case traces back to August 7, 2025, when the prosecution formally submitted the charge sheet against the individuals.
Following the submission, the tribunal formally framed charges against the five accused on September 18 last year, ordering the official trial to begin.
The case stems from the brutal violence unleashed during the mass uprising on July 19, 2024, in the Rampura area, where two people were killed during the crackdowns.
The incident gained widespread attention after a young man was shot and severely injured by police while desperately hanging from the cornice of a building to escape the gunfire.
