BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has affirmed the party's support for reforms—but stressed that any such changes must have the consent of the people.
Speaking during a dialogue with the National Consensus Commission at the National Parliament on Thursday, Khan stated, "We support reform, but above all, it must be grounded in public approval."
The session was moderated by the Chief Advisor's Special Assistant, Monir Hayder. Other attendees from the Commission included members Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr Iftekharuzzaman.
The BNP delegation was led by Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and included Nazrul Islam Khan, the party Chairperson's Advisor Ismail Zabiullah, Ruhul Quddus Kajol, and Moniruzzaman Khan.
Referring to the July uprising, Khan said it had created a new democratic environment in the country. "We now have a renewed chance to rebuild the nation, and we intend to make the most of it. We are cooperating with the Commission and the government with that intention," he added.
Khan pointed out that although the BNP had won many political struggles, it often failed to sustain those victories. He further argued that the BNP had historically led the way in reform: "We told the Chief Advisor yesterday—no political party in Bangladesh has introduced more reforms than the BNP. Reform is part of our identity. Those who now speak of reform were silent when our leader, Khaleda Zia, launched Vision 2030 years ago."
While the National Consensus Commission may not have a formal charter yet, Khan highlighted that the BNP already has a clear reform agenda: a 31-point declaration. "We already have our reform roadmap. But what's most important is that everything must be done with the people's support and involvement."
