A new political party named Janata Party Bangladesh has officially been launched, led by renowned actor and social activist Ilias Kanchan. The party's slogan is "Building a Just Bangladesh."
The announcement was made on Friday (April 25) morning at a hotel in Dhaka, where the party's name, vision, and future plans—including preparations for upcoming elections—were formally introduced.
Ilias Kanchan himself is the chairman of the party. Since the death of his wife, Jahanara Kanchan, in a road accident in 1993, he has been leading a social movement called Nirapad Sarak Chai (We Demand Safe Roads).
The party's Secretary General is Shawkat Mahmud, former president of the National Press Club. Former Deputy Minister Golam Sarwar Milon has been named the party's Vice Chairman.
Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, nearly two dozen new political parties have emerged across Bangladesh, reflecting a rapidly shifting political landscape.
