BNP leader Ishraque Hossain has announced a 48-hour suspension of the ongoing protest movement.
Speaking at the protest site in Kakrail on Thursday afternoon, Ishraque said, "Today's court verdict marks a victory for the rule of law. In light of this, we are temporarily suspending our movement."
He reaffirmed BNP's earlier demand for the resignation of two student advisers to the current government. "We are standing firm on our demand," he said. "We will monitor the government's actions over the next 24 to 48 hours. If the advisers do not resign within this time, we will return to the streets."
Apologizing for any inconvenience caused by the protests, Ishraque stated, "We regret the suffering caused to the public by our programs. But one day, people will understand the reason behind our movement. Our fight is far from over."
He credited grassroots BNP activists and the people of Dhaka for what he described as a collective victory. "Today, the people of Dhaka have claimed their rights. It's not just me who has become the mayor—each one of you has. This victory belongs to all of you."
The protest began on Wednesday morning, when Ishraque's supporters gathered in Kakrail, demanding he be sworn in as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). They continued their demonstration throughout the night.
