Bangladesh was in control for most of the match. The Tigers posted a large total in their first innings thanks to brilliant batting from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim.

However, Sri Lanka responded well on Galle's batting paradise. Still, the visitors managed a small lead of 10 runs. With Shanto's excellent batting in the second innings, Bangladesh boldly declared their innings.

At that point, 37 overs of play were still left in the day. However, the Tigers could only pick up four Sri Lankan wickets during this time. As a result, Bangladesh began their new ICC Test Championship cycle with a draw.

Batting first in Galle, Bangladesh were all out for 495 in their first innings. In response, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 485.

With a 10-run lead, Bangladesh declared their second innings at 285 for 6 wickets. Sri Lanka then reached 72 for 4 wickets, and both teams agreed to a draw.

Chasing a target of 296 for victory, Sri Lanka started aggressively. However, it backfired. While trying to score quickly, both openers returned to the pavilion just as quickly.

On the last ball of the sixth over, Lahiru Udara tried to step out and play a shot against Taijul Islam, but he couldn't get in line with the turning ball.

Litton Das quickly collected the ball and broke the stumps. Lahiru departed for 9 runs off 13 balls, breaking the 32-run opening partnership.

Just one ball later, the other opener, Pathum Nissanka, was dismissed. He gave a simple catch to Shanto off Nayeem. He scored 24 runs off 25 balls before returning to the dressing room.

Before the tea break on the fifth day, Sri Lanka were 34 for 2 wickets in their second innings after 8 overs. After the break, Bangladesh could only pick up two more wickets.

Earlier, at the start of the fifth day's play, Bangladesh had a lead of 187 runs. Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim were unbeaten. Their start to the day was cautious and slow. However, Bangladesh wasn't really falling behind. Rain interrupted just before lunch.

On the ball right before the interruption, Mushfiqur was run out for 49. Shanto was then 11 runs short of a century.

This single century could have put Shanto's name in the records of global legends. So, Shanto batted cautiously, taking 22 balls to score 11 runs.

However, on the other side, Litton Kumar Das and Zakir Ali Anik were fooled by some excellent spin and had to return. Then Nayeem provided great support. After his century, Shanto also played aggressively.

Finally, Bangladesh declared their innings at 285 for 6 wickets, setting Sri Lanka a target of 296 runs.
