Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today (Friday) described the US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW)’s latest statement on Bangladesh as “one-sided, unacceptable and politically motivated”. “After reading this, it seems that someone from Bangladesh might have drafted it and they (HRW) only published it after retouching, nothing else,” he said.

The Unites States (US) 2020 Country Reports on Terrorism (CRT) has found that Bangladesh experienced a decrease in terrorist activity in 2020, accompanied by an increase in terrorism-related investigations and arrests. “The Bangladesh government continued to articulate a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and the use of its territory as a terrorist safe haven,” said the report issued by US State Department on Thursday.

With 7.40 million people living abroad, Bangladesh has ranked the 6th largest migrant sending country globally in 2020 while neighbouring India has the largest emigrant population in the world with nearly 18 million people abroad. Bangladesh has also ranked 8th largest remittance receiving country in 2020 with the total amount of US$21.75 billion received in 2020, according to a report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
