Mustafa Kamal Palash, a weather and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in 16 districts across Bangladesh due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
In a post from his verified Facebook account on Thursday (29 May), Palash stated that heavy rain is likely to begin over Barishal division after 12 pm and over Chattogram division after 1 pm.
He explained that cloud bands generated by the low-pressure system had already spread across eight divisions by 11 AM, with rainfall starting in several areas. However, no rainfall had been reported yet in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions as of that time. Nationwide rain is expected to begin by 4 PM, and due to the persistent low pressure, the rainfall may continue throughout today and tomorrow.
Satellite and radar data show light to moderate rain already falling in parts of Barisal, Chattogram, and Dhaka divisions. The intensity is expected to increase as the day progresses. Continuous rainfall is likely from Thursday noon to Friday noon across these three divisions.
Palash specifically warned of very heavy rainfall in the districts of Patuakhali, Bhola, Noakhali, Feni, Cumilla, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria, Sunamganj, Sylhet, Netrokona, Sherpur, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Kishoreganj, Chattogram, and Khagrachhari. Cumilla and Feni could receive as much as 200 to 300 millimetres of rain within this 24-hour period.
