A deep depression over the Northwest Bay has prompted the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) to issue cautionary signals for the country’s maritime and inland river ports.
According to a special weather bulletin released this morning, maritime facilities in Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been instructed to maintain local cautionary signal No. 3 (R).
The system, which originated as a monsoon depression over the Northwest Bay along the Odisha-West Bengal coastline, gathered strength and converted into a deep depression.
By 6am on Monday, the weather system was centered at latitude 21.2°N and longitude 88.1°E over the Northwest Bay and the adjacent West Bengal-North Odisha region.
Official position reports place the storm center roughly 425 kilometers west-southwest of Chattogram, 430 kilometers west of Cox's Bazar, 220 kilometers west-southwest of Mongla, and 260 kilometers west-southwest of Payra.
Forecasters project that the system will travel in a north-northwesterly trajectory, making landfall across the West Bengal-North Odisha coastline by this evening (July 27, 2026).
The atmospheric disturbance is expected to bring squally conditions to Bangladesh's maritime hubs, the North Bay, and nearby coastal zones.
Maximum continuous winds within 48 kilometers of the storm's center are running at approximately 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts and squalls reaching up to 60 kilometers per hour. Sea conditions surrounding the center remain rough.
In response to the turbulent waters, meteorologists have directed all fishing trawlers and boats operating in the North Bay to stay anchored in safe harbor until conditions improve.
Additionally, a separate warning for inland river ports forecasts rain and thundershowers driven by south to southeasterly gusty winds ranging between 45 and 60 kilometers per hour.
These conditions are anticipated across the territories of Rajshahi, Pabna, Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox's Bazar. River ports throughout these regions have been advised to display cautionary signal No. 1 (R).
