Teesta water reaching danger level, fear of flood

The water level of Teesta river is increasing due to the effect of upstream flow and rainfall. Due to this, water has started rising in the lower areas along the river banks of different areas of Lalmonirhat district and in different areas. Cultivated land including paddy and jute fields is sinking. Residents of the riverside are afraid of flooding again.

At 9 am on Wednesday (June 19), the Teesta barrage, the country's largest irrigation project, recorded a flow of 51.92 cm, flowing 23 cm below the flood line. (Normal 52.15 cm). Earlier at 6 am, there was 51.95 cm of water at the Teesta barrage point, which flows 20 cm below the flood line.

It has been reported that due to rising Teesta water, hundreds of families in Sadar Upazila's Kalmati, Khuniyagach; Aditmari Upazila's Mahish Khocha, Govardhan, Sardarpara; Kaliganj Upazila's Bhotmari, Kakina; Hatibandha Upazila's Saniajan, Goddimari, Patikapara, Singimari and Sindurna Union areas have become waterlogged.

Dalia Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mohammad Asfauddin daula said that the water in Teesta is increasing due to the release of water in Gajoldoba. Teesta water is flowing 23 cm below the boundary line since morning.

Water Development Board Lalmonirhat Executive Engineer Shunil Kumar quoting the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said that according to the information of meteorological agencies, the water level of the river is rising due to moderate to heavy and in some places very heavy rainfall in the northern part of the country and adjacent upstream. As a result, the water in Teesta, Dharla, Dudhkumar etc rivers in the northern part of the country is increasing rapidly.
