A search committee has been formed to recommend candidates to the President for the formation of a new Election Commission (EC), including the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners, in accordance with the law.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Thursday, October 31, establishing the committee. According to the law, the committee must submit its recommendations to the President within 15 working days.

The six-member search committee for forming the EC will be chaired by Senior Justice of the Appellate Division, Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury.

The committee includes High Court Senior Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman. The two distinguished citizens nominated by the President are Professor Zeenatun Nesa Tahmida Begum, former Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC), and Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, former Professor of International Relations at Dhaka University.

Additionally, according to the law, members by virtue of their positions include Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Md. Nurul Islam and PSC Chairman Mobasser Monem.

This search committee will recommend to the President candidates for the positions of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four other Election Commissioners to form the EC.

The law governing the formation of the EC mandates that the search committee submit two names per vacant position to the President for consideration. A quorum for committee meetings will be formed with the presence of three members.

The search committee will operate in line with the “Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022.” The Cabinet Division will provide necessary administrative support to facilitate the committee's work, as noted in the order.
