A message containing a bomb threat was sent to the mobile number of the duty officer of the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from a Malaysian number.

This threat message was sent via WhatsApp on Wednesday night (January 22). Subsequently, the authorities immediately tightened security as part of emergency precautionary measures.

According to airport sources, at 11 PM on Wednesday (January 22), the WhatsApp number of a Malaysian user sent the threat message to the duty officer of the APBn. However, flight operations at the airport remain normal.

Confirming the incident, the Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Group Captain Mohammad Kamrul Islam, stated, “Although a threat was received at night, the airport’s operations remain uninterrupted. We have received another potential threat message from an unfamiliar WhatsApp number. Following standard protocol, we have enhanced security measures in coordination with all forces stationed at the airport. There is no cause for panic, and all activities at the airport are continuing as usual.”

Earlier in the day, a message from a Pakistani number claimed there were explosives aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arriving from Italy. The message stated that 34 kilograms of explosives were on board the flight from Rome to Dhaka, and they would be detonated upon the aircraft’s landing at Shahjalal Airport. However, it was clarified that the message was issued as a precautionary alert and not as an actual threat.

The source further revealed that after receiving the message, attempts were made to call the number, but it went unanswered. Even though the calls were not received, WhatsApp chatting continued, and alerts were issued to everyone. When asked during the chat who might have placed the explosives, the sender hinted that it could be an act by an opposing party seeking international attention.

Following the receipt of the message, the Hazrat Shahjalal Airport authorities made an emergency landing of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Rome carrying 250 passengers to ensure their safety. Everyone was promptly alerted.

Later in the afternoon, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retired) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury dismissed the threat, stating, “It’s false news. Nothing has happened. False information has been spread, and efforts are underway to identify those responsible. Once identified, they will be brought under the law.”
