The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has raised serious allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of political influence against Saima Wazed Putul. In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, the ACC stated that her appointment to a prominent position at the World Health Organization (WHO) is a source of national embarrassment.

On Sunday (January 26), ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Md Akhtarul Islam confirmed the development, disclosing findings from an investigation that revealed alleged irregularities surrounding Saima Wazed Putul's nomination as WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia, a position endorsed by Bangladesh.

According to the ACC, Saima Wazed Putul benefitted from numerous state-funded trips without valid justification, and her qualifications for the role were deemed inadequate. Additionally, the ACC stated that during her nomination, she held a Canadian passport, raising concerns about her eligibility to represent Bangladesh.

The ACC highlighted that over 100 Bangladeshi officials and representatives attended the 76th WHO conference held in Delhi from October 30 to November 2, 2023, incurring substantial expenses from state funds. The investigation alleges that Saima Wazed Putul misused her familial influence and state resources during this period, resulting in significant financial losses for the government.

The ACC also uncovered evidence of corruption related to a 10-katha plot of land in Dhaka's Purbachal New Town diplomatic zone, which was allegedly acquired through abuse of political influence. A case has already been filed against her and others regarding this matter.

Additionally, Saima Wazed Putul has been accused of financial misconduct involving her organization, the "Shuchona Foundation." Allegations include coercing businesses and social entities into providing gifts, misappropriating state funds through fake projects under the Autism Cell of the Ministry of Health, and unlawfully obtaining tax exemptions from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for the foundation's funds.

The ACC warned that allowing someone with such allegations of corruption to represent Bangladesh in a prestigious international position tarnishes the nation's reputation and undermines its integrity on the global stage.
