The angry garments workers vandalized several vehicles and torched one bus at Malibagh in the capital as two female workers were killed following hit by a bus of Suprobhat Paribahan.
Following the accident at around 3 pm the agitating garments workers blocked the road at Abul Hotel point at Malibagh with their demand of punishment for the bus driver. Chase and counter chase between police and the workers took place at that time.
The deceased are Nahid Parvin Poly (22) and Mim (16). They were workers of MH Garments. Poly hailed from Syedpur of Nilphamari and Mim was from Gabtali upazila of Bogura district. They lived in a rented house of Moghbazar’s Purba Nayatola in the capital.
After the accident police seized the bus and arrested the driver. Bodies of the two young women were kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Officer in Charge of Rampura police station Enamul Haque said, the two female workers were killed as a bus of Suprobhat Paribahan hit them at the point between Malibagh rail gate and Abul Hotel. After hearing the death news of their fellows the garments workers blocked the road in front of Abul Hotel.
Workers were seen demonstrating on the road from Malibagh rail crossing to Rampura television bhaban. The workers barred all types of vehicles to run on the road. Police than managed the Rampura bound vehicles from Malibagh to use the Moghbazar diversion via Hatirjheel road.
