Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and retired Justice Md Abdur Rouf.
In a condolence message, Prof Yunus prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
He reflected on Justice Rouf's significant role in restoring democracy in Bangladesh. After assuming the office of Chief Election Commissioner on December 25, 1990, following the fall of dictator Ershad on December 6 that year amid a mass movement, Justice Rouf played a pivotal role in shaping the country's democratic process.
"Justice Rouf will remain a shining example in Bangladesh's democratic journey. His contributions will forever be cherished by the people of this nation," the Chief Adviser stated.
Describing Justice Rouf as a cornerstone of civil society, Prof Yunus praised his relentless efforts in ensuring voting rights, electoral reforms, and the strengthening of democracy. "The nation will always remember his dedication with the utmost respect," he added.
Justice Md Abdur Rouf, a former judge of the Appellate Division, passed away today while undergoing treatment at Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital in Dhaka. He was 91.
