China has expressed a positive stance on implementing the much-discussed Teesta Project, along with showing interest in working on Bangladesh's water resource management.
At a briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Sunday (March 30), the High Representative of the Chief Adviser, Dr Khalilur Rahman, shared this information.
He stated, "We have successfully completed 50 remarkable years of diplomatic relations with China. Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping have laid a strong foundation for strengthening our bilateral ties over the next 50 years. Water resource management and industrialization are two key areas of focus."
Dr Khalilur Rahman further emphasized that both nations must now work together to build on these pillars. He also highlighted the growing collaboration between educational institutions in Bangladesh and China.
Additionally, he mentioned that China has responded positively to expanding higher education opportunities for Bangladeshi students. Currently, a significant number of Bangladeshi students are pursuing studies in China, and this number is expected to rise in the coming years.
The event was attended by Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury and the Chief Adviser's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.
Earlier on March 26, Interim Government's Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus arrived in China for a four-day official visit. He was warmly welcomed with a red-carpet reception by the Chinese government.
On March 27, he delivered a speech at the opening session of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2025.
On March 28, Dr Yunus held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. During this meeting, Bangladesh and China signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement along with eight memorandums of understanding (MoUs).
Following this, Dr Yunus participated in an investment dialogue with Chinese business leaders. He also attended three roundtable discussions focused on:
Sustainable infrastructure and energy investment
Bangladesh's production and market expansion (Bangladesh 2.0)
Social business, youth entrepreneurship, and the concept of a "Three Zero" world
During his visit, Dr Yunus met with several high-profile leaders, including China's Executive Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk, and former UN Secretary-General and Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Chairman Ban Ki-moon.
After completing his four-day visit, Dr Muhammad Yunus returned to Bangladesh on the night of March 29.
Accompanying him on this visit were Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Energy Adviser Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, High Representative Dr Khalilur Rahman, Chief Coordinator for SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed, and Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
