The state informed the High Court that some important documents related to the Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi murder case, kept at the Detective Branch (DB) office, were damaged in a fire. This information was later reported in the media. However, both the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) have denied the claim, calling it inaccurate.
DMP's Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, stated on Tuesday that the investigation period for the case has been extended by six months. He clarified that reports of DB files being burned are false.
"No such claim was made in court," Rahman said. "Additional Attorney General Arsadur Rauf only mentioned that due to the transfer of most DB officers, retrieving old case files is taking longer than expected. The state had requested a nine-month extension, while the plaintiff's side proposed three months. The court ultimately granted six."
PBI officials also denied the reports of any fire damage. According to the agency, the claim that DB files were burned is baseless. They reiterated that no mention of fire or document damage was made in court.
Earlier today, the High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Shikdar Mahmudur Raji approved a six-month extension for the investigation into the high-profile murder case of the journalist couple.
Speaking to the media, Additional Attorney General Arsadur Rauf clarified that the reports claiming partial damage to DB documents by fire were incorrect.
