Journalists have announced that they will launch a strict movement if the final investigation report on the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi is not submitted by March 2. Additionally, a delegation of journalists will meet with the Home Affairs Advisor on Wednesday (February 12) to submit a memorandum demanding justice.
At a protest rally held on Tuesday (February 11) in front of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon made this declaration, emphasizing the urgency of justice for the slain journalists.
"We have learned that the final report is scheduled to be submitted by March 2. We will wait until then. If the report is not filed, we will form a struggle committee and take to the streets in full force. Moreover, tomorrow, a memorandum will be submitted to the Home Affairs Advisor, reinforcing our demand for justice," he said.
Akon further stressed, "Everyone here demands justice for Sagar and Runi. We expect that the new DRU committee will continue this fight. Those who attempted to divert our movement enriched themselves, travelled abroad with government funds, and lived lavishly—InshaAllah, they will also face accountability."
Reflecting on the prolonged delay in justice, he remarked, "Thirteen years have passed, yet justice remains elusive. The Awami League government's handling of this case proves its fascist nature—it deliberately misdirected the investigation to protect influential figures involved. Even today, we don't know the names of the killers. But times have changed. A revolutionary government is now in power, and we expect them to deliver justice. If not, we will keep fighting, no matter how long it takes."
Senior journalists present at the rally reiterated their commitment, stating, "We were on the ground when this tragic incident occurred, and we will not back down. We do not want to stand here next year making the same demand. Justice must be served swiftly. We also urge that the day of Sagar-Runi’s murder be officially declared as Journalists' Protection Day."
Among those who spoke at the rally were Dhaka Journalists Union President Shahidul Islam, Union Secretary Khorshed Alam, DRU's first committee's former secretary Monowarul Islam, former president Sakhawat Hossain Badsha, former secretary Raju Ahmed, and former president Elias Hossain, among others.
