Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has stated that the Election Commission (EC) will not wait for reform suggestions from the National Consensus Commission. Instead, it will move forward with election preparations using the powers currently available to it.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday (April 24) after a meeting with the Australian High Commissioner at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, the CEC emphasised that the EC is fully focused on ensuring a fair and participatory election.
He noted that Australia has expressed its hope for a credible and inclusive election in Bangladesh and has assured full support in this regard. The Australian High Commissioner, Susan Reilly, confirmed her country's willingness to assist in all election-related matters.
The CEC also mentioned ongoing discussions regarding the updating of the voter list and the involvement of international election observers.
He clarified that while political initiatives are the domain of the Consensus Commission, the EC is concentrating solely on its responsibilities. All necessary tasks leading up to the election are being carried out under the Commission's authority.
Preparations are already underway, including the procurement of election materials. He added that legislative amendments are required for boundary delimitation, which will begin once approved by the Ministry of Law.
Additionally, the deadline for political party registration applications has been extended. Overall, the EC is actively moving forward with full-scale preparations for the upcoming national election.
