On this occasion, the European Union (EU) has extended its appreciation for Bangladesh's significant role in global peacekeeping missions.

In a statement released by the EU Delegation in Dhaka, it said, "We acknowledge the efforts made to resolve conflicts and save lives. The EU remains firmly committed to the United Nations and international law. The contribution of Bangladeshi peacekeepers not only strengthens global peace but also supports Bangladesh's development."

Since 1988, Bangladesh has taken part in 63 UN peacekeeping missions across 43 countries and regions, according to UN data. Over 200,000 personnel from the country's armed forces have served in these operations. Currently, 5,818 Bangladeshi peacekeepers, including 444 women, are deployed across 10 countries.

Data from the Armed Forces Division (AFD) shows that 144 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have lost their lives while serving in these missions, with 141 of them being members of the Army.

The theme for this year's Peacekeepers Day is "Fit for the Future of Peacekeeping", highlighting the evolving nature of peace operations in today's complex and rapidly changing global landscape. The United Nations is working actively to modernise and adapt peacekeeping efforts to meet emerging challenges.

To mark the occasion, Bangladesh has organised various state-level events. The day began with a tribute to fallen peacekeepers. Former Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury inaugurated the "Peacekeepers Run/Rally 2025" as the chief guest. Later, a special event was held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, which included an honour ceremony for injured peacekeepers and discussions on UN peacekeeping operations. Economic Advisor Dr Salehuddin Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest.

The program was attended by advisory council members, ambassadors and high commissioners, the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, chiefs of the three armed forces, the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, the Inspector General of Police, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and prominent media personalities.

Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus also issued a message on the occasion. He said, "During last July–August's mass protests involving students, workers, and citizens, the armed forces stood beside the people and played an exemplary role in restoring peace and order. Our experienced armed forces and police continue to work tirelessly in conflict prevention, civilian protection, human rights assurance, and peacebuilding. Bangladesh is committed to a culture of peace, tolerance, and humanity. Our active involvement in UN peacekeeping missions reflects our firm dedication to global peace and stability. I am confident that our peacekeepers will continue to bring pride to Bangladesh through their professionalism, bravery, compassion, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication, earning recognition as global peace champions."
