Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has warned that six districts in Bangladesh may experience flooding within the next two to three days due to heavy rainfall. Rising river levels in these regions could cross danger marks, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
In a press release issued on Thursday (May 29), the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre stated that rivers such as the Gomti, Muhuri, and Feni in the Chattogram Division are expected to rise over the next two days. The Muhuri River, in particular, may flow above the danger level, posing a flood risk to low-lying areas of Feni District. A slight drop in water levels is expected the following day.
In the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, rivers including the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Manu, Dhalai, Khowai, and Someshwari may also swell and exceed danger levels over the next three days. As a result, flooding is likely in low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and Netrokona districts.
Similarly, rivers such as the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar in the Rangpur Division are expected to rise, with the Teesta nearing the danger level. Coastal rivers in Barishal, Khulna, and Chattogram divisions may also see higher-than-normal tides in the coming two days.
Meanwhile, water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are currently decreasing but may rise again in the next three days, though likely to stay below the danger mark.
Sardar Uday Raihan, Executive Engineer at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, said that low-lying areas in six districts could be flooded. However, he added that if rainfall decreases, water levels may recede.
