Hundreds of Villages Flooded in Sherpur Due to Continuous Rains
Continuous rainfall since Thursday has caused the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers in Sherpur to exceed danger levels, submerging more than a hundred villages in the low-lying areas of Jhenaigati's Maharshi and Nalitabari's Bhogai.
As a result, the river embankment has broken in some places, flooding the lower areas of hundreds of villages in the district. In this, hundreds of families have been waterlogged.
According to the district water development board, the maximum rainfall was 260 mm in the last night. Onrush water from upstream and heavy rainfall caused the surge in water levels. At least 30 educational institutions have been flooded already. Besides, water entered several mosques, madrasas, and business farms.
Out of the four important points in the district, water is flowing above the danger level at three points. The water is flowing 172cm above the danger level at Nakugaon point, 56cm at Nalitabari point, and 525cm at Batkuchi point of the Bhogai River.
On the other hand, the farmers and fishing farm workers are in tension due to the increase of river water in the Mrigi River.
On the other hand, the water of the Someshwari River coming down from India bordering Sreebardi is also increasing. The water from the hill slopes has entered the city in Jhenaigati upazila. Various educational institutions including the main road, market alleys, and offices have been submerged in it. The residents were in trouble due to being inundated by sudden hill slopes.
According to the Agriculture Department, the district has received 225 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.
Locals said that the flood water had entered Jhenaigati upazila town. The main roads, market alleys, and various educational institutions including offices have been submerged in it. The locals were in trouble due to being inundated by sudden torrential water. Over half a hundred villages in the lower areas were flooded overnight. As it is still raining, the water level of the rivers continues to rise.
Nakibuzzaman Khan, Executive Engineer of Sherpur Water Development Board, told the media that the water of three rivers is flowing over the border in Sherpur due to rain in the last 24 hours. If the rains continue, more areas will be flooded. The repair work of the damaged embankment will be started soon.
