Today (6 April) is the 94th birth anniversary of legendary actress Suchitra Sen. Her birthday was commemorated at her ancestral home on Hemsagar Lane in Pabna with a simple yet heartfelt tribute. The event included the laying of floral wreaths, a commemorative discussion, and a cake-cutting ceremony.
On Sunday (April 6) at 11:30 am, members of the Suchitra Sen Memorial Preservation Council paid homage at the actress' sculpture located at her family residence. The tribute was followed by a brief discussion session.
Presiding over the event was Dr Ramdulal Bhowmik, acting president of the council. Also speaking at the gathering were Naresh Madhu, general secretary of the council, and ABM Fazlu Rahman, former president of the local press club.
Born on April 6, 1931, in Pabna (then part of British India's Bengal Presidency), Suchitra Sen's birth name was Roma Roy. She was the third child of Karunamoy Dasgupta and Indira Devi.
Her film career began in 1952 with the unreleased movie Shesh Kothay. However, her official debut came with Shaare Chuattor, in which she starred opposite the iconic Uttam Kumar. Their on-screen chemistry quickly established them as Bengali cinema's most beloved duo.
Over the years, she delivered a string of box office successes, with acclaimed performances in films such as Harano Sur, Agni Porikkha, Sagorika, Shoptopodi, Pothe Holo Deri, Indrani, Chawa Pawa, Saat Pake Badha, Deep Jele Jaai, Shap Mochon and many more.
Throughout her 25-year acting career, Suchitra Sen remained a leading lady, never taking on a supporting role. Determined to preserve her screen image, she chose a life of seclusion after retiring in 1978 and stayed out of the public eye for the rest of her life.
Suchitra Sen passed away on January 17, 2014, marking the end of a legendary era in Bengali cinema.
