Bangladesh Ranks Among Deadliest Countries for Journalists
Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an international organization advocating for press freedom, has listed four cities as the most dangerous for journalists and released data on journalists killed while performing their duties in the past year.
According to a report by The Economic Times on Thursday (December 12), RSF revealed that 54 journalists were killed globally in 2024 while carrying out their professional responsibilities. Bangladesh ranks third on the list, with at least five journalists killed.
RSF's ranking of the most dangerous countries for journalists places Gaza at the top, followed by Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Mexico.
The report noted that 18 journalists were killed in Israeli attacks this year, including 16 in Gaza and two in Lebanon. Pakistan recorded seven deaths, while both Bangladesh and Mexico reported five journalist fatalities.
From January to December 2023, 45 journalists were killed worldwide. Currently, 55 journalists are being held hostage, with 25 in the custody of the Islamic State (ISIS). Additionally, 95 journalists were reported missing in 2024.
RSF has filed four war crime charges against the Israeli military at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The organization claims that since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, more than 145 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces, including 35 while reporting.
However, Israel denies targeting journalists, stating that any casualties among journalists may have occurred while targeting military objectives.
