Tensions in the Middle East have flared once again following a surprise Israeli offensive on Iran last Thursday, dubbed "Operation Rising Lion." The attack targeted key Iranian military installations, nuclear research facilities, and even residential areas across Tehran and other cities.
The strike resulted in the deaths of at least 78 individuals, including several high-ranking officials: Iran's Armed Forces Chief Mohammad Bagheri, IRGC Commander Hossein Salami, Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters Commander Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, and six nuclear scientists.
In response, Iran launched its own counteroffensive late Friday night (13 June), under the name "Operation True Promise-3." As missiles rained down, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly took refuge in an underground bunker alongside senior ministers and security chiefs.
Amid fears of a broader regional conflict, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a strong appeal for calm. Posting from his verified X account, he said, "Israel's airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran's missile attacks on Tel Aviv must stop now. It's time for peace to prevail. Let diplomacy lead the way."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also voiced concern. Following a conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, she reaffirmed the EU's support for Israel's right to self-defence while also stressing the need for regional stability. "I urge all parties to show maximum restraint," she stated. "De-escalation efforts must be swift and effective."
According to a report from Al Jazeera, several Iranian missiles struck Israel's commercial hub, Tel Aviv, in a three-phase assault on Friday night. One woman was killed and at least 48 others were injured in the attack.
