Heart Disease
While ultra-processed foods may be enjoyable, frequent consumption can negatively impact heart health. Research published in The Lancet links high intake of these foods to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD). Other studies suggest a higher likelihood of stroke.

Type 2 Diabetes
Ultra-processed foods are loaded with hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, and refined carbohydrates—key contributors to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Diets lacking fibre, vitamins, and minerals further elevate the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Mental Health Disorders
Regular consumption of junk food may also affect mental well-being. A study published in Nutrients found that people who eat more ultra-processed foods have a 53% higher risk of developing mental health issues, including depression and anxiety.

Cancer
Ultra-processed foods could be more harmful than you realize. According to The Lancet Planetary Health, a high intake of these foods is associated with an increased risk of several cancers, including those affecting the head, neck, esophagus, colon, rectum, liver, and postmenopausal breast tissue.

Obesity
Junk food is packed with empty calories, saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and sodium—all of which contribute to excessive weight gain and obesity-related health complications.

Ultra-processed foods can be highly addictive, stimulating the brain's reward system similarly to nicotine or alcohol. This can lead to intense cravings and, over time, unhealthy eating habits that resemble addiction.

A 2024 review in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that consuming more ultra-processed foods is associated with a higher risk of premature death. It has also been linked to 32 health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders.
